Move Up time is here! Move Up Sunday is THIS SUNDAY August 24th – that’s the first Sunday we welcome our kids to “move up” to their new grades/ages for the 2014-2015 school year. I know my soon to be 4th grader is excited to go his new 4th grade class!
During August, our elementary kids are talking about respect—showing others they are important by what you say and do.
This month our memory verse comes from 1 Peter 2:17. It just says, “Show proper respect to everyone.” (NIrV) If your child memorizes the monthly or the weekly verse and can tell it to any member of the Children’s Ministry staff, they will receive a prize!
This week, we learn more about James 3:9-12. Our words can be used to glorify God one minute and talk badly about our friends the next. When we’re talking about respect, often it’s our words that we really need to watch.
Our Bottom Line is: Respect others with your words. Our words have power. Let’s use them to value others and treat them with respect.
We hope that as kids discover what the Bible says about respect in August, they’ll head into their new school year knowing they can respect those in charge because they know the One who’s in charge of everything.
Our curriculum, Orange, has great “Parent Cues” that we’ll be sending home each month, both in hard copy on Sunday morning and in these posts. For this week’s cue, use these conversations starters:
Ask a kid: Who is someone in authority that you owe respect?
Ask a parent: What is one thing we as a family can do to embrace an attitude of mutual respect?
For our preschoolers, there’s no better way to start a year than to recalibrate and refocus, so that’s what we’re doing for August. We are spending the rest of this month introducing the three basic truths to our preschoolers and their parents. We want all three of them to be front and center so everyone (you included) can be reminded what the goal is. Do you know the goal? Here it is: We want every child to know God made me, God loves me, and Jesus wants to be my friend forever. And, we want them to embrace it firmly in their little hearts.
We’ll start this week by reminding preschoolers that God made them. He made each little eyelash and each little freckle, and that makes them so very special. Then they’ll hear how much God loves them and that He has a plan for each and every one of them just as He had a plan for Abraham, which will be our story next week! Each week we’ll give you a key question to use with your child and a basic truth for that week, what we want them to remember from their lesson, and the overarching bottom line. Here it is for this week:
Who loves you?
God made me. God loves me.
Jesus wants to be my friend forever.
God loves me.
In addition, there are live podcasts on the topic of the month. Download the podcast on www.OrangeParents.org. Also check out www.Studio252.tv and the Parent CUE App for your smartphone. I have the app and love it because it pops up and gives me conversation starters – it’s a great trigger reminding me of the weekly and monthly focus and how to bring it home. There’s even videos and songs for the kids!
For our teachers, here’s this week’s lessons:
