There’s 5 Sundays in November this year, and that means:
That’s right – whenever there is a 5th Sunday in a month, we use our Sunday school hour(s) to work on service projects with our kids at the ROCK – it’s one of our favorite times, and theirs, too!
We are thrilled to support Backpack Buddies (http://foodshuttle.org/we-feed/childrens-hunger-relief/backpack-buddies/) as our outreach this month. BackPack Buddies provides children from food-insecure homes with healthy weekend meals during the school year. The children, selected by school principals, guidance counselors, and supervisors of various after school programs, receive a backpack containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks at the end of every week. The local and national news have recently aired stories about children going hungry when they are out of school. For many, the meals they get at school are it: there is no food at home.
Help stop the hunger cycle by donating food items all month for us to use in our BackPack Buddies Packing Party on Sunday, November 29th .
Starting Sunday, November 1st, there will be a chalkboard near the main entrance that has “tags” on it. Each tag notes a food item (type, quantity, etc.) that is needed for the backpacks. Take a tag (or two!) home with you and add that item to your shopping list. Return the food (no tag needed) to the box located at the main Children’s Center entrance by November 22nd and the elementary aged kids will use it to pack a bag during the Sunday school hours on the 29th.
All of our lessons this month are focused on Jesus and how he came to serve, not be served. Our bottom lines each week this month are about serving because of what Jesus did, with a good attitude, using the gifts God gave you and without looking for applause. Use these lessons to teach your children while you shop; and actions speak louder than words, so show them how to serve by helping out that morning! We will need servants to help the kids with this project on the 29th – email Stacy at SHarrell@fumc-cary.org today to learn more or sign up. Many hands make light work!
November is a month where it is common to give thanks for what we have been given as well as enjoy a hearty meal on Thanksgiving Day. As you shop for your turkey day feast, remember those food-insecure children and use a tag to pick up a little something extra at the grocery store. Fill your soul, along with your tummy this Thanksgiving.
