Forward Thinking Goals
Linda Miller addressed the Forward Thinking Goals submitted by ministry committees and no items were lifted off for discernment. Please click here for the forward thinking goals.
Finance Committee Chair, Maureen Sawchak provided a financial update suggesting a very strong position YTD with a cash status of 113% funded. Members were made aware of the endowment (donor designated fund) and long term (board designated fund) savings. Both will be reported in the future. Please click here for February’s financial report.
MCC Enrollment for 2016-2017 is decidedly lower than normal. Traffic and the difficulties in accessing the facility due to construction were cited as reasons. MCC does have strong retained earnings to sustain an anomaly year.
John Huffman, Trustee Chair presented the Town of Cary feedback with regards to the Zev Summit Easement. The Town of Cary requires the egress /ingress easement be 20 feet wide rather than the original 16 feet. The Town of Cary also requires a utility easement (118.91×20’) be granted by FUMCC to the Town of Cary for a waterline which will be capped allowing FUMCC to tap into the line if needed in the future. The issue was presented to council members for discernment and all were in consensus. Please click here for easement documents.
Brad Henke communicated 3 items in the Staff Parish Relations update.
• Kim Chesnutt tendered her resignation in February.
• Karen Schreiner now reporting to Rev. Emily Mills.
• Performance reviews are underway and going very well.
Music Academy Update
Rev. Martha McLean reminded church council members of the Music Academy conceptual proposal made by the Music Committee in August 2015. The committee is addressing additional questions before bringing a full proposal before council. The presentation will likely be at the May meeting.
Executive Director, Christine Hildebrand shared RSI meeting updates and facilitated a discussion of the 11 Fatal Mistakes Churches Make during Capital Campaigns document. Church Council members were reminded of their responsibility to generate and maintain focus for the campaign within their spheres of influence. Suggestions were made by council members to create more awareness of the remaining Town Hall Meeting where the recommendations of the Building Study Committee will be shared.
A Stewardship Statement recommendation came before the council for discernment. This statement is meant to provide intention and focus during the 6 weeks of the capital campaign. After discussion of how the statement might be heard, interpreted, and implemented by the wider congregation, church council members came to consensus in support of the following statement:
The Church Council, recognizing the top-level priority of the Capital Campaign for FUMCC’s missional future, has discerned that during the period of the Capital Campaign, our church-wide focus will be on the success of the Capital campaign. There will be no competing messages, fundraisers or events impacting the congregation.
Closing Observations – Reverend Martha McLean
Reverend Martha McLean offered thanksgiving for the healthy conversation and unity of purpose that guided the meetings discernment. She also recognized the Trustees, RSI Team members and the Building Study Team for their extensive efforts.
Church Council Chair, Linda Miller led council members in a closing prayer and the meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm.
The next church council meeting will be on May 26 at 7:00pm in room 200. All are welcome to attend.
