Welcome and Introductions-Linda Miller
The meeting was called to order by Church Council Chair, Linda Miller at 7:00pm. Reverend Carl Frazier welcomed President Joel Mikell and Dan Marengo of the capital campaign consulting firm, RSI. He also recognized Reverend Donna Thompson of Avent Ferry United Methodist Church as a special guest.
Lay Leader, Mark Schneider, led a devotional and reflected on the first disciples’ willingness to change when they were called by Jesus in Matthew 4:18-22.
Nominations Committee-Carl Frazier
Dr. Frazier presented a recommendation by the nominations committee to have Tom Herndon return to Staff Parish to replace Jim Hedrick through June 30, 2017. The motion was seconded. The vote was called by show of hands. The motion was carried unanimously.
Church Council members shared and celebrated the ways in which FUMC shared the heart of Christ from the heart of Cary since the last meeting.

Strategic Conversation-Joel Mikell
Joel Mikell facilitated discussion on Stewardship Leadership through a series of questions and conversation. He relayed the 3 key foundational thoughts for the follower of Christ and for the church as we move forward.
- All things financial are spiritual before they are transactional.
- Sacrificial giving is always relational.
- Biblical stewardship is transformational.
He concluded by encouraging leadership to seek the heart of God through prayer about involvement and investment in the upcoming capital campaign.
Mark Schneider reminded council members of each ministries commitment to restructure, realign and consolidate programs to align with our vision and mission. The target date for each ministries’ evaluation is December 1st.
Treasurer, Maureen Sawchak reported a tighter year and a flat budget for 2017. The trends for both giving and spending indicate an even trend rather than a surplus. 108% of reserve is funded. Click here for August Financial Report.
SPRC Update-Brad Henke
Staff Parish Relations Chair, Brad Henke reported that the budget recommendation was approved.
Church Council Covenant-Mark Schneider
Members recommended updates to the church council covenant that included replacing old GPS language with the current mission as well as other modifications. Carl Frazier and Mark Schneider agreed to wordsmith all suggestions and present for approval at the next meeting.
Building Study Update – Reverend Carl Frazier
The next meeting with the architect will focus on detail and design of the youth and community center. The Building Committee is also in the process of assembling 7-10 subcommittees.
Closing Observations – Reverend Carl Frazier
Reverend Frazier thanked council members for the energy and focus on ministry evaluation. He stated the need for this evaluation to be a continual process in order to reveal the very ministries that will grow people and give us the much needed relational stories to share as part of the upcoming capital campaign.
The next meeting will be December 1, 2016 and Reverend Gray Southern, the new District Superintendent will be attending the charge conference.
