FUMC Church Council Meeting Minutes
August 3, 2017
Lighting of the Christ Candle and Opening Prayer
The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Church Council Chair, Maureen Sawchak, who led the group in the lighting of the Christ Candle and gave an opening prayer.
Linda Hodges, Lay Leader, delivered a devotional regarding ‘Joy,’ which emphasized that in all life situations in which we find ourselves, as Christians, we should look for, and can find joy through Christ daily.
Maureen Sawchak led the group, meeting for the first time since new members were named, in introductions.
Forward Thinking Goals
The current list of Forward Thinking Goals had been provided to council members for review in advance of the meeting. No items were lifted from the list. One clarifying question was posed regarding, the ‘Family Ministry model and method,’ included under Christian Formation Ministry Goals. Reverend Carl Frazier responded that development is in-process, and this model will result in a more continuous system of worship from birth through high school, incorporating the whole family and eliminating the ‘silo’ effect that can exist between the Children’s and Youth Worship programs. As announced by SPRC prior to the meeting, Stacy Harrell will serve as Director of Family Ministry.
Church Council members shared and celebrated the ways in which FUMC shared the heart of Christ from the heart of Cary since the last meeting.
Annual Conference Update
Bob Anderson reported on FUMCC Lay Members representation to the Annual Conference in Greenville NC this year. Bob and Sara Anderson, and Gary and Marylyn McCollum attended. The theme for this year was, ‘Generosity in all Places.’ Speakers included Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, Dr. Greg Jones, and Thomas Kemper. FUMCC’s Andrew Thrash spoke in his capacity as Conference President United Methodist Youth. Four resolutions were adopted; the original, edited and final resolutions can be found on the Annual Conference website. https://nccumc.org/ac2017/files/2017/05/2017-Resolutions.pdf.
Senior Adult Day Care Task Force
Reverend Heather Wong provided an update regarding the Congregational Care Ministry goal to establish a Senior Adult Day Care at FUMCC. A task force to evaluate needs has been formed, and members have been identified; a leader of the task force has yet to be selected.
Task Force on Race and the Church
Reverend Carl Frazier reported the task force is being formed. It is hoped that formation will be complete by the end of August. Multiple initiatives are under consideration, with an overall goal being to dismantle and eliminate racism at whatever levels we can.
Finance Chair/Assistant Treasurer, Lisa Varani reported funding for 2017 remains on tract. Requests for 2018 budget needs from committees will be forthcoming from Lisa and Bob Warner in the coming weeks, to be completed and returned by October; it was requested that budgets remain, ‘Flat,’ for 2018 as we progress with the Building Campaign. Hal Belk provided an update on the changes to the FUMCC fleet structure (Proposal for changes approved by the Council April 2017). The church bus and two vans have been sold. A new shuttle will arrive early August, resulting in a fleet consisting of one van and two shuttles.
