The purpose of the Conference shall be to comply with the requirements of para. 2544.8 of The Book of Discipline, 2016 which calls for the Building Committee to present detailed plans and specifications, along with cost estimates and financial plans, for final pre-construction approval of the building project. At 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall – everyone is invited; full members of First UMC Cary may vote.
MCC Playground Relocation
The playground will be closed December 18 through January 1 for the move from our campus to beside the Memorial Garden Columbarium. The reason for the move is in preparation for the beginning of the building project which will be starting in the parking lot beside the current playground.
The space will be occupied by the Methodist Children’s Center preschool during school days from 8:30am to 1:30pm, and open to the public after that, and on weekends. Please excuse our noise — this will not be our permanent spot. As soon as that part of the building is completed, the playground will move back across the street.
We would like to remind the congregation to drive more slowly down Waldo Street after the move, as we will have children crossing during the day to get to the playground. Thank you for your patience and consideration!

Stay active and help feed hungry children during Advent: December 3 through 24
Please join Health Ministries in The Walk To Bethlehem. Over the 21 days of Advent, we will track our physical activity. The goal is to accumulate 96 miles (the estimated distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem) in any type of physical activity you choose, including the steps you take during the day!
Along our 96 mile journey, we will celebrate our progress by stopping at a “rest stop” every 12 miles to “share a meal.” Each time you accumulate 12 miles, please consider donating at least one can to support Backpack Buddies. There will be a Walk to Bethlehem rest stop bin in the church office. Our goal is to be more active while providing for hungry children!
Participate individually or create a team and divide the mileage between teammates (a team of 4 people means only 24 miles per person!). Click below to register:

New for January 2018 – Discovery Weekend Warrior
We all know being a pre-teen and young teen can have its challenges. We also know this age group is the future of our church, community, and nation. The middle school youth (6th through 8th grade) from our church will be attending a weekend long event at FUMC Cary called ‘Discovery’ on January 26-28, 2018.
The ‘Discovery’ event is a 43-hour spiritual formation retreat for these youth to learn about and experience the love of God. As you have already experienced 6th through 8th grade, you are well positioned to provide our youth the support that will help them open their hearts to this wonderful, personal experience with our Lord Jesus Christ that they will pull on for days and years to come as they lead our church, community and nation.
This weekend shows that the middle school youth have the love and support of the entire congregation. We’d love to make some intergenerational connections that weekend to show them this.
If you meet the following criteria, then you are on your way to becoming a Discovery Weekend Warrior
- Did you complete 6-8th grade, 10-80 years ago?
- Are you willing to write one note with a few words of encouragement in January to your assigned middle school child?
- Are you willing to pray for your assigned middle child in January that they grow in their faith during Discovery Weekend?
- Are you available to attend worship service January 27, 2018 at 7:00 pm for one hour to support your assigned middle school child by standing up in the pew for a few seconds while he/she is called to the front to be individually prayed over by name.
- Are you willing to share a few fun facts about you, like where you went to 6th grade, your favorite color, etc?
- Are you willing to have your picture taken? We want the middle school child to have a name and face with who is praying for them!

Church Library News
Advent and Christmas books from the Church Library are now available for checkout in 1st Cup room. While getting your morning coffee or just visiting, look at the books available on the bookcase. There is also a DVD “Charting Christmas: discovering the origins of Christmas traditions” that is good family viewing.
The History Committee has had some response to our request for help with producing a book celebrating out 150th anniversary in 2021. We still need some help from people who are interested in doing some research, then writing up their results. If you don’t want to write, but have memories you want to share, you should contact us. The success of the book depends on you. Please contact me at 919-467-0088 or email@example.com, or Timmons Player at Timmons@monkeyplayground.net if you can help. — Bob Warner, FUMCC Historian
Financial Peace University
When we offered Financial Peace University at First Cary a few years ago, more than one hundred couples signed up. We are thrilled to be able to offer it again in the new year!
Financial Peace University is a financial course that will help you find freedom in your financial life. During this course, you will learn how to eliminate debt, save for the future, and give generously. This video-based course, taught by Dave Ramsey, will walk you through all these steps over nine weeks while connecting you to others who are eager to find freedom of their own. Our class will meet on Sundays from 2:00-4:00pm, beginning on Sunday, January 14.
Registration is $109/person, though a limited number are available through the church office for $93 (please call the church office to purchase one of these discounted kits, while available). If married, the spouse attends for free.
Questions? Contact Cheryl Randecker at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Ready to register? Sign up at https://fpu.com/1052700. We can’t wait to see you there, and we’re excited for you!
Prison Ministry: Kairos 47
Kairos 47 is basically right around the corner! I want to ask if some of the men of the church would consider becoming team members for this Kairos. It is a commitment! There are four team meetings at St. Andrews UMC to get you ready to go into Central Prison. They are December 16, January 6 and 27, and February 3. These meetings are from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The program is February 7 through 10, 2018. There is a follow-up meeting on February 17 at Central Prison. We also go into the prison on the third Saturday of each month for reunion which the residents plan and we support. Three of us volunteer to go into the Central Prison Chapel for Prayer and Share each Tuesday from 6:00-7:00pm. If you feel a nudging from God to be in a ministry and in service to others, please consider being a part of this. I guarantee, you will bring away more from the experience than you put into it. I have applications on hand and would be glad to talk to anyone interested in becoming a Kairos Team Member. Call me 919-851-8515 or 919-614-3475 or email me at email@example.com. If I don’t pick up, please leave me a message. Please pray about this and become a team member.
