Lighting of the Christ Candle and Opening Prayer
The meeting was called to order by Church Council Chair, Maureen Sawchak, who led the group in the lighting of the Christ Candle and gave an opening prayer. Maureen welcomed congregation members present in addition to Church Council members.
Linda Hodges, Lay Leader, delivered a devotional regarding ‘Hope.’
State of the Church
Reverend Carl Frazier presented our annual State of the Church on behalf of our Pastoral Team. Click here for the report.
Finance Chair/Assistant Treasurer, Lisa Varani informed the group that the 2017 year end surplus was $25,000.00, and 2017 giving ended ahead of five and ten year trends. The cash reserve is 125% of our reserve required. Nearly $3,000,000.00 dollars has been received in the way of Building To Serve contributions to date, with greater than $2,600,000.00 of these funds remaining in the bank. Hal Belk reported the Trustees, after considering the purchase of a new van, have determined it will be more feasible to rent vans when needed rather than purchase one.
In the absence of Cody Hand, Staff Parish Relations Chair, Maureen Sawchak noted there was nothing to report from SPRC.
Building Committee Update
Curtis Westbrook reported that approval of the building permit for the Youth and Community Center by the town of Cary is anticipated the week commencing 05 February 2018, with construction beginning soon thereafter. Curtis noted numerous activities are already underway in preparation for the imminent construction.
Senior Adult Day Care Task Force
Reverend Heather Wong reported the task force is in the process of evaluating and working with the Building Committee how best to incorporate the Center as part of Phase 2 of the Building To Serve project.
Task Force on Race and the Church
Linda Hodges expressed gratitude from the task force for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. She noted, as learned by the task force in its training thus far, SEED is an acronym, which stands for Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity, and the task force is on a journey, with ‘seeds’ of understanding being sown at the moment.
Celebration Service Task Force
Reverend William Green reported the Celebration Task Force continues to envision what worship service needs might be moving forward, having recently met with Reverend Colin Snider to discuss experiences from 1st on Chatham that could provide useful information.
Reverend Carl Frazier reported the Nominations Committee is at work, having met once already since the New Year. The next Church Council meeting is scheduled for 05 April 2018, but as this is the week immediately following Easter, this meeting may be moved to 12 April 2018. This meeting will be a meeting of discernment, and the Trustees will bring the matter of Building/Space Use Policy to the council for discernment. Carl noted other areas should look to see if changes are needed to policies for their respective areas.
