Graduation is right around the corner and we know everyone is excited! June 4, 2017 will be Graduation Sunday at First Cary. We are happy to invite you to participate in this year’s worship, reception, and scholarship awards.
High school, technical program, community college and university graduates are asked to wear their cap and gown to worship on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the 11:05am Sanctuary worship service. Graduates will meet and line up at the Academy Street entrance to the sanctuary at 10:45am. In case of rain please meet outside the office lobby under the covered walkway. We will process into the sanctuary during the prelude.
This year we will have an afternoon reception for all graduates on Sunday, June 4, from 3:00 – 5:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. There will be snacks in the First Cup room and tables set up for fellowship. During this time we will present the graduates with scholarships.
To assist us in planning, please click here to RSVP for the worship service and/or the reception that day.
The scholarship applications will be posted on the youth page of the church web site by April 1, 2017. All the instructions and information for submitting applications will be posted at that time.
Graduates are asked to send a wallet-size self-portrait to Karen Schreiner by Sunday, May 21, 2017. This picture is for display and needs to be a hard copy, not an electronic copy. Please include high school, college/future/work plans as well. Graduates are welcome to send electronic copies of snap shots of service and fellowship events at First Cary to be compiled into a slide show, which will play during our reception in the Fellowship Hall. These are also due to Karen Schreiner by Sunday, May 21, 2017.
Many blessings to you as you enter the ‘home stretch’ of the school year. We look forward to worshiping with you and celebrating your achievement.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Emily Mills, Corey Dao-Forrester, and Karen Schreiner
WHAT is an IGP Fundraiser? IGP stands for income generating project. Zoe ministry helps orphans in Africa and around the world to become self-sufficient by providing them with training and small grants to implement income generating projects. The income that orphans earn supports them and their families. Our children at First Cary can also plan and implement craft and carnival style income generating projects for VBS. The money they earn will support the Zoe ministry.
WHO is involved in the VBS IGP Fundraiser? We need youth who are interested in being an IGP FLOATER or part of our IGP PHOTO/VIDEO TEAM. Floaters will help our rising 3rd-6th graders to set-up, conduct, and take-down their IGP stations. Photo/Video helpers will capture the action during the week and put together a photo/video montage to be shared with our VBS participants.
WHEN will the IGP Fundraiser take place? We need your help during VBS week, July 17-21. FLOATERS need to be on site 45 minutes before VBS start and 30 minutes following VBS end. PHOTO/VIDEO team members need to be on site during VBS hours.
WHY get involved? The VBS IGP Fundraiser is part of a larger church wide Zoe IGP Fundraiser that will extend from July to November. You’ll witness what it is like for Zoe orphans to believe in the promise found in Jeremiah 29:11 and step out in faith that God’s plan for them is great. So let’s GET HOPE GROWING!

Summer 2017 Ministry Internship
Integral to our mission as a church is our role of being instruments of the Holy Spirit to move through us so others can become disciples of Jesus Christ and explore their calling for pastoral leadership.
God calls us all to ministry but calls some to ministry as a vocation. This summer First Cary is offering young adults an opportunity to discern and explore God’s call on their lives. The Ministry Intern will have the chance to shadow members of our ministry team in different ministry areas of our church. This is an 8-week paid internship at 20 hours per week. The schedule varies and includes Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and some Saturdays. Participation is required at weeklong camps such as Mission Week and Vacation Bible School. The internship is designed for students who are exploring God’s call to ministry and who have completed their junior year of high school to those who have completed their freshman year in college.
If you are interested in applying for the Summer Ministry Internship please complete the online registration form and submit an essay that responds to the questions below. The essay should be no more than 500 words. Please submit the essay to Pastor Emily Mills via email at email@example.com or by bringing or mailing a hard copy to the church.
You may contact Pastor Emily Mills or Duke Ministry Intern Corey Dao-Forrester at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you may have or if you need any more information. The completed registration form and essay are due by 5:00pm on April 30, 2017.
What are some ways that you have become aware of God’s call on your life?
How has your faith and relationship with God changed over time?
What spiritual gifts has God given you and how would you use those gifts as you
explore ministry through the internship?
What area of ministry would you like to explore deeper, and why?

Hello Confirmands and Families,
Grace and Peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ. Confirmation is just around the corner and here’s all the information you need to know as we head toward Confirmation Sunday, May 7, 2017. This Sunday, March 26, is our last regular Sunday morning Confirmation lesson.
As part of the Confirmation process each confirmand is required to have a conversation with Corey Dao-Forrester, our Duke Youth Ministry Intern, or myself. These conversations will last between 15-30 minutes. During this time the prospective confirmand will be asked if they are ready to profess their faith in Jesus Christ in front of the congregation and to take their membership vows. These conversational interviews are casual and relaxed and will be discussions of what each person learned from the Confirmation process. As always, the decision to be confirmed is entirely up to the individual.
All confirmands are asked to use Sign-Up Genius to select a time for his or her pastoral interview. Please click here to access the interview sign-ups. You will be signing up for a time slot that Corey or I have made available for this interview. You will not know which of us you have been assigned until you come for the interview. But don’t worry – we’re nice and easygoing! You will be met in the church lobby at your interview time. Parents are welcome to wait in the church lobby as the interview is taking place.
To help us navigate Confirmation Sunday morning we will have a rehearsal in the sanctuary on Sunday, April 30, 2017, right after UMYF at 7:00 – 8:00pm. Each confirmand will need to have an adult representative present with them at the rehearsal. The rehearsal is for everyone who will be confirmed in all services including the sanctuary services, the 1st on Chatham services, or the Celebration service. All questions about what will happen during worship, including questions about those being baptized, will be answered at the rehearsal.
Each confirmand can sign up to be confirmed at any of our 6 worship services on May 7, 2017. Due to space restraints a maximum of 15 confirmands will be confirmed at each of the sanctuary services. Please click here to access the Sign-Up Genius and choose the worship service you will attend. If the service you choose is full then please sign up for a different worship service that morning.
Baptism comes before being confirmed. If your confirmand is not yet baptized, they will be baptized before taking their membership vows as part of Confirmation Sunday. The discussion on baptism will take place during the pastoral interview. On Confirmation Sunday please plan on wearing what you would typically wear to church on Sunday mornings.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or Corey at email@example.com, or call the church office at (919) 467-1861. You will continue to be in our prayers.
Grace and Peace,

Hello Youth and Families!
Our Building to Serve initiative is underway and we want to share with you how Youth Ministry will be a part of this program. This will be a time of worship, learning, and small group study. Building to Serve will be a meaningful and spiritual journey where our local church will focus on how God is working through us to affect people’s lives in our community and the world.
We will be learning and focusing on the same ideas and scriptures at the same time as other groups in the church. We’ll follow the Building to Serve sermon series that the pastors will preach during this time. We have been given study materials that co-ordinate with children, young adult, adult and worship themes. We have adapted the study materials to be able to lead the youth in fulfilling our mission, and to learn to be faithful stewards during our Building to Serve initiative.
We’ll be learning and seeking God’s guidance in what God is calling this church and this youth ministry to do and to be. There are many ways to be involved. Please sign up to receive our Daily Prayer Reminder text at 1:17pm each day. (Youth, be sure to keep your phones turned off during school hours!) You can sign up by going to our church web site, www.firstcary.com, and clicking on the green banner, or by texting “@117pray” to 81010. We want youth to help lead worship during this time so please sign up to participate by clicking here to access the Sign-Up Genius.

We believe that God has called the people of First Cary to share the heart of Christ from the heart of Cary. We believe that God has planted this people here for 146 years and calls us to continue to be a faithful presence in the community well into the future. We believe this building is one of the tools God has given us to fulfill that mission and be faithful stewards. We are Building to Serve…
Grace to you and peace from God the Creator and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
Pastor Emily, Corey, and Karen
NC Wesleyan Youth Theology Institute
YTI, a Lilly Endowment funded program, is offered on our campus and through our faculty for high school students who are interested in learning about Christian ministry, theology and leadership. We are currently accepting applications for our Summer 2017 programs. Yes, programs! We have so many students from last summer who want to return that we will host two separate weeks of YTI this summer. Also, we are currently offering $100 off tuition for our Early Bird applicants. Enter coupon code #YTISummer2017Schools in the comment section of the online application. Coupon expires March 20th.
What do we do and how? YTI provides rising 10th through 12th grade high school students the time, place and tools to discern God’s calling upon their lives. YTI introduces students to spiritual disciplines necessary to sustain them throughout their lives, teaches analytical skills necessary to study and synthesize scripture and other writings from their Christian traditions, and assists in setting up mentor relationships that offer guidance, support and opportunities to grow in leadership and service. YTI also encourages students to form covenantal relationships with other Christian students who are also discerning their calling to vocational ministry, missions or areas of religious leadership and shed light on ministry opportunities where young people can serve in their communities. It is our goal to come alongside students, parents and local churches to encourage youth in Christian growth. Students currently enrolled in YTI have set up Bible studies in their schools, assisted with local missions and study books on spiritual formation to share with mentors and small groups.
The first session is July 9 to July 14 and will discuss Christian ethics and justice. The second session is July 16 to July 23 and will have a focus on the Christian ethical response to poverty. We will again travel to visit ministries and missions targeted at these two topics and spend our afternoons in the classroom reading and discussing how our faith and the scriptures address each topic.
