IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL!
Spiritual health is having a relationship with God, whose unconditional love gives us a sense of significance, belonging, and purpose. Let me illustrate this for you by this true story.
A priest from Detroit took a two week vacation to Ireland to be with his only remaining uncle who was about to turn eighty. When the great day arrived, he arose before the dawn to walk around Lake Killarney with his uncle. As the sun began to peek over the horizon, they stood side by side to watch in silence, captivated by the beauty of it all.
After several minutes of watching, they resumed their walk. The priest turned to see that his uncle’s face had broken into a broad smile. He said, “Uncle Seamus, you look happy.”
“I am,” he replied. The priest asked, “How come?” And his uncle answered, “The Father of Jesus is very fond of me.”
Is that how you understand God’s love for you? When you realize how much you are loved by your Heavenly Father, you are truly healthy!
Here is a simple test that you can take to determine your spiritual health. “Can you say that it is well with your soul today?” If we can’t say that it is well with our soul, what good is it to have a fit body, sound mind, and plenty of friends?
“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.’ (I Timothy 4:8)
The good news is that we can order our lives around the spiritual practices of worship, prayer, and scripture, and grow in godliness, never having to doubt God’s love for ourselves.
Polly and I pray every morning. We pray that we may be happy in our soul before we leave the house! Life brings its daily challenges, but how much better I can handle them when I know deep down inside that “it is well with my soul!”
Hope to see you in worship this Sunday! Who knows? Maybe Uncle Seamus will be there too!
