There are a number of roles that shepherds take on for their flocks: protecting, herding, feeding, preserving. It’s no coincidence that Jesus references this metaphor in particular as part of his own identity. As he reflects on those who follow him, he cannot help but think of them as his flock. As he cares for those who follow him, and for even those who don’t, Jesus offers space for all to be known, and to know in return. As we come to know the person of Christ, may we experience the goodness, presence, and protection of the Good Shepherd.
